Diving with Whale Sharks is on most divers wish list. We have discovered many places in the world where you can see Whale Sharks but we have found many places to be unethical and don’t meet the high standards Dive UK Travel set. Many places feed the Whale Sharks to keep them in the area for tourists which is something we don’t believe in. We certainly don’t except that some destination net the bay not allowing them to move freely.
Whale Sharks are the largest animal in the ocean and are very soft and gentle creatures, they tend to move very slowly and gracefully though the water. In Borneo where we take our customers to see them, they are very friendly and will often come and see you in the water and come very close as you will see from the videos on you tube and the pictures on this page.
While we cannot guarantee any encounter with wild animals the chances are very high. As with all Sharks, they are very lazy and always find the easiest food source. Dive UK Travel have found during our research that the Whale Sharks stay close to the fishing platforms as they eat all of the scraps not wanted by the fishermen. Also the fish that escape the nets are quickly sucked up by the Whale Sharks. Can you blame them? If you had a free food source daily you would stick around too right!
We were very lucky to have 5 Whale Sharks around us when we went and it was a very special experience. We had them come very close and the Whale Sharks would happily come and see us leading to a once in a life time chance to see them so closely.
Diving with Whale Sharks can be done in many places but we would certainly recommend Borneo as a place to swim with these amazing animals.
Come and join one of our trips to the amazing Borneo in 2026 and 2027, a trip you will never forget!
We ask all divers are a minimum of PADI Advanced Open Water and be very confident in their diving abilities. The Whale Sharks are located in Blue water with no sight of the bottom and buoyancy needs to be of a good standard. A minimum of 50 dives too. Many of the other dives in Borneo are drift dives, while most are shallow divers will need to be self-sufficient and need little assistance when diving.
